Washington Too Much for the Cats The Carlisle Wildcats traveled two plus hours on Monday,
November 3rd to take on the Washington Demons in the second round of
the IAHSSA State Football Class 3A Playoffs. The Demons used big plays on
offense to overcome the Cats by the final score of 46-20. The Cats only trailed
25-20 heading into the fourth quarter. Carlisle finishes the season with an 8-3
overall record and a 5-1 record in district play. The Cats squared off with 8
playoff teams on the season in what proved to be a very challenging schedule.
Offensively the Cats were led by senior running back Tyrell
Erb who finished with 143 yards on 25 carries and one TD. Junior Peyton
Stephens rushed for 71 yards on 17 carries while QB Jordan Pierce had 16 yards
on six carries. Pierce finished 8-32 thru the air for 89 yards with one TD and
one INT. Noah Smith, Josh Hagedorn, and Brian Robertson each had two catches
while Erb and Henry Sanders each finished with one reception each.
Defensively the Cats were led by Joe Crowley’s nine tackles
including a sack. Robertson finished with eight tackles while Andrew Burnett
had seven tackles a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Sanders picked off his
seventh pass of the season while Garett Onstot also had a fumble recovery.
Jose Fuentes was again 2-2 on field goals, 2-2 on PAT’s,
and had three touchbacks on five kickoff attempts.Burnett held a 32 yard average punting while
Erb (28) and Sanders (57) led in return yardage.

Carlisle Defeats Winterset in Round 1 The Carlisle Wildcats varsity football team hosted their
first playoff game since 2010 and did not disappoint with a 27-6 victory over
the rival Huskies. The Cats rolled up 3
touchdowns and two field goals in the game and gave up a TD to Winterset with
under a minute to go in the game for the Huskies’ only points.
Offensively the Cats rolled up close to 300 yards of total
offense versus a very stingy defense. Peyton Stephens rushed for 102 yards on
12 carries and 1 TD. Ty Erb had 51 yards on 11 carries while KC McMullen had 30
yards on 11 carries before a second quarter injury forced him to the sidelines.
Junior QB Jordan Pierce was 10-16 throwing the ball for 109 yards. Senior TE
Noah Smith made some acrobatic catches on his way to a game high 54 yards on 5
catches. Josh Hagedorn had three catches for 23 yards while Erb and Henry
Sanders each had receptions of 15 and 17 yards respectively.
The defense employed a bend but don’t break philosophy all
night giving up just over 250 yards of total offense but only a late score.
Juniors Brian Robertson and Chase Shannahan led the way with 9 tackles each
followed by Joe Crowley with 7, Hunter Warren 6, Damon Piatt 5, and Andrew
Burnett 5. Piatt had 1.5 sacks while Crowley (1) and Shannahan (0.5) also brought
down the QB in the backfield on passing plays. Sanders had his team leading 6th
interception of the season while Stephens and Austin Burger both had fumble
recoveries.
Jose Fuentes continued his torrid streak of kicking the
ball well as he went 2-2 on field goals, 3-3 on PAT’s, and had 3 touchbacks out
of six kickoffs.
With the win the Cats will travel to Washington to take on
the Demons in the 2nd Round of the Class 3A state playoffs.
Cats win 45-0 on Senior Night Twenty-two seniors played their last regular season home
game on Friday night as they led the Cats to a 45-0 win over the Oskaloosa
Indians. The Cats finished the regular season with a 7-2 overall record and a
5-1 mark in Class 3A District 7 play. Carlisle will host the Winterset Huskies
in the first round of the playoffs held here in Carlisle on Wednesday 10/29 at
7pm.
Many players contributed on the defensive side of the ball
to preserve the shutout. Senior Damon Piatt led the squad with 8 tackles
including 2 solo sacks. Junior Chase Shannahan also finished with 8 total stops
including a tackle for loss. Senior Mason Mumm (7), junior Brian Robertson (6),
Henry Sanders (5), Joe Crowley (5) and Garett Onstot (5) rounded out the top
tacklers. Tyler Danitz had a fumble recovery and Mumm had an interception. Junior quarterback Jordan Pierce led the offensive charge
going 8-13 thru the air for 181 yards and 2 touchdowns. Sanders had a 67 yard
touchdown catch while Robertson finished with 2 catches for 57 yards and a TD.
Noah Smith (3-39) and KC McMullen (1-14) also had big catches for the Cats.
McMullen led the ground attack with 85 yards on 8 carries and a TD. Tyrell Erb
had 5 carries for 23 yards and a TD while Pierce had 6 carries for 12 yards and
a TD. Shannahan only got one carry on the night but he busted through the line
of scrimmage for a 75 yard TD.
Jose Fuentes has a good night off the tee as he went 6-6 on
PAT’s, hit a 37 yard field goal, and had two touchbacks kicking off.
Cats Roll Chargers 48-14, Clinch 2nd Place in District
With Carlisle’s varsity football’s 48-14 win over Chariton
on Friday night, the Cats clinches a runner up finish in Class 3A District 7
and will host a first round playoff game vs. an opponent to be named later on
Wednesday, October 29th. Carlisle will have Senior Night on 10/24
vs. Oskaloosa to wrap up district action.
The Cats jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the 2nd quarter but Chariton
came charging back. Chariton intercepted a pass and returned it to the Carlisle
32 yard line with a minute to go in the 2nd quarter. They found
their all-state receiver, TJ Hockenson, in the back of the end zone for a TD
with four seconds remaining in the half. The Chargers found the 6’6 Hockenson
again right after the half in the end zone to make it a 21-14 game with 10
minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter. The Wildcat offensive line and
ground game along with the Cats opportunistic D took over from there, shutting
out the Chargers and piling on four TD’s to win 48-14. Defensively the Cats
forced four turnovers, including a 25 yard fumble recovery for a TD by Chase
Shanahan. Senior Henry Sanders had two interceptions while junior Brian
Robertson had another. Sanders now has 5 picks on the season and Robertson 3.
Joe Crowley led in the tackle department with 13 followed by fellow junior Andrew
Burnett with 10. Tyler Danitz forced a fumble while Burnett, Andrew Hill, Nolan
Vollstedt, and Luke Oja all had tackles for loss.
Offensively the Cats rolled up 449 yards of rushing on 55 carries and 11 yards
of passing to hit the 460 total yard mark. Ty Erb had 18 carries for 187 and 4
TD’s while KC McMullen had 196 yards on 23 carries and 1 TD. Junior Peyton
Stephens finished with 64 yards on 7 carries. Robertson had the team’s lone reception
for an 11 yard gain.
Austin Burger had kicking duties for the night and finished 6-7 on PAT’s.
McMullen had one punt return for 14 yards and two kickoff returns for the Cats.
Burnett and Mason Mumm led the team with 4 special teams tackles each on
kickoff coverage on the night.
Cats Pounce on Eagles 71-12
The Carlisle Wildcats varsity football team traveled to Saydel to take on the Eagles on a beautiful football Friday night. The Cats gave the scoreboard operators plenty of work as they defeated Saydel 71-12 to move to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in Class 3A District 7 play.
Several players got in on the scoring act including QB Jordan Pierce who had 4 rushing touchdowns (57 yards on 6 carries), Peyton Stephens (4 carries for 82 yards and 2 TD's). KC McMullen (11 carries for 116 and 1 TD), Gabe McCaughey (8 carries for 53 yards and 1 TD), and Brendan Smith (3 carries for 23 yards and 1 TD). Ty Erb also had 42 yards on 7 carries. Pierce finished 1-4 in the passing department with Erb reeling in his only completion for a 25 yard gain.
Defensively the Cats had tw0 interceptions and also forced a fumble in the endzone that was recovered by Joe Crowley for a Wildcat TD. Stephens and Henry Sanders both had interceptions while Kire Seskis also had a fumble recovery. Crowley led the Wildcats with 6 tackles while Andrew Burnett jad 5 total stops. Chipping in with four tackles included Nolan Vollstedt (2 TFL), Chase Shanahan, Andrew Hill (2 TFL), KC McMullen, and Stephens.
Jose Fuentes and Erb led the charge on the Wildcat special teams. Erb had 111 yards on 3 kickoff returns while Fuentes went 9-9 on PAT's and also had 11 kickoffs including 3 touchbacks. Shannahan also blocked a punt. The Cats travel to Chariton next week and will wrap up the regular season the following week (10-24) at home vs. Oskaloosa.
#1 Pella Holds off Carlisle 17-6
The #1 ranked Pella Little Dutch turned 3 Wildcat turnovers into points as they held off the #9 ranked Wildcats in a Class 3A District 7 match-up on a blistery night in Carlisle. Pella came into the game averaging 41 points a game and only giving up 5.3 points per game. Pella had been averaging over 400 yards of total offense per game but the Wildcat D held them to 185, including only 57 yards on 20 carries by all-state quarterback Noah Clayberg.
Defensively the Cats were led by 5 junior linebackers including Joe Crowley (15 tackles), Peyton Stephens (7), Chase Shannahan (6 tackles including a solo sack), Andrew Burnett (6) and Brian Robertson (5 tackles). Senior defensive ends Damon Piatt (8 tackles) and Tyler Danitz (7) helped to stop the high-powered Dutch attack while senior Henry Sanders had the team's lone fumble recovery.
Offensively the Cats were led by Ty Erb with 62 yards on 26 carries. KC McMullen had 43 yards on 7 carries while junior Jordan Pierce went 9-22 for 138 yards passing with 2 INT's. Six different receivers caught balls led by Sanders with 2 catches for 44 yards. Robertson had 2 catches for 38 yards and Smith 2 catches for 30 yards.
Jose Fuentes had another solid night off the tee with 2 of his 3 kickoffs going for touchbacks and he also went 2-2 in field goals from 22 and 26 yards respectively. Erb had 3 kickoff returns for 70 yards, one punt return for 5 yards and had a huge blocked field goal in the first quarter.
Cats trump #6 Bombers 49-14
The Carlisle Wildcats varsity had a
balanced attack to defeat the #6 ranked Ballard Bombers on Homecoming 49-14.
Ballard was 4-0 coming in to the contest and was leading Class 3A in rushing
yardage. However, it was the offensive line and tight ends of the Wildcats who
stepped up in a huge manner. They paved the way for the Cats to pile up 526
yards of total offense on 60 plays. The offense also held a huge advantage in
time of possession playing keep away from the high powered Bomber no-huddle
attack. The Cats varsity defense held Ballard to 240 yards of total offense,
including the state’s 3rd and 6th top rushers in Class
3A.Junior
quarterback once again found his tight ends Brian Robertson and Noah Smith for
huge chunks of yardage in the passing game. Pierce finished 4-7 for 169 yards
and 2 TD’s including an 84 yard scoring strike to Robertson. Brian also had
another 21 yard reception. Smith caught two balls for 64 yards and a TD. Senior
KC McMullen found paydirt 4 times on his way to 142 yards on 18 carries. Pierce
had 62 yards on the ground on 16 carries while Ty Erb had 12 carries for 69
yards. Others getting in on the rushing attack included Peyton Stephens (2-38),
Brenden Smith (2-36 including a TD), Gabe McCaughey (2-5), and Chase Shannahan
(1-5).
Defensively
the Cats did not have any standouts but instead used a total team effort to
help slow down the Bomber attack. Stephens led the team with 8 tackles
including two tackles for loss. Junior inside linebacker Joe Crowley had 7
tackles, Erb finished with 6, and senior defensive end Damon Piatt with 5
including his team-leading 5th sack of the season. Robertson and
senior Henry Sanders both had interceptions while Jose Fuentes recovered a
fumble.
Fuentes
again led the charge on special teams going 5-6 on PAT’s. He also had 8
kickoffs for a 53 yard average. Andrew Burnett averaged 37 yards per punt while
Erb (2-47) led the team in kickoff returns and McMullen (1-17) in punt returns.
The
Cats moved to 4-1 (2-0 in district play) with the win and will host #1 ranked
Pella next Friday at home.
Cats Win Highway 5 Battle
The Knoxville and Carlisle varsity football teams traded knockout punches in a game that was full of big plays. The Cats rolled up over 500 yards of total offense to outlast the Panthers 51-28 at Ken Locke Stadium in Knoxville. Junior quarterback Jordan Pierce had a great night going 11-14 for 235 yards and 2 TD’s. He also had 4 carries for 52 yards and 2 TD’s. Senior backfield mates KC McMullen (15-123 and 1 TD) and Ty Erb (17-93 and 2 TD) led the ground game. Junior tight end Brian Robertson had 4 catches for 113 yards and a TD while senior receiver Henry Sanders finished with 2 catches for 61 yards and a TD. Senior tight end Noah Smith hauled in three receptions for 49 yards and senior Josh Hagedorn had two catches for 12 yards. Junior Nate Snyder also completed a 13 yard reception to fellow classmate Adam Van Gorp. The defense gave up some big plays but also forced three fumbles and had six tackles for loss. Joe Crowley hit the double digit mark with 10 tackles, a forced fumble, and a pass deflection. Erb finished with 10 tackles from the defensive backfield while Kire Seskis (6), Nolan Vollstedt (6), Robertson (5), Tyler Danitz (5), Damon Piatt (5), Sanders (5) all helped a balanced defensive attack. Austin Burger, Andrew Hill, Crowley, Piatt, and Robertson all had tackles for loss. Danitz, Piatt, and Robertson all had fumble recoveries. Senior kicker Jose Fuentes went 6-7 on extra points, nailed a 34 yard field goal, and kicked 5 touchbacks out of 8 attempts to lead the special teams.
Cats Win
Warren County Showdown on Heroes Night Norwalk jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter but the Wildcats
showed plenty of poise and resolve to come back in the 2nd half and
defeat the Warriors 14-7 on Heroes Night in Carlisle on September 12. This was
the third straight year that the Cats and Warriors have finished the game with
a margin of victory at 7 points or less.
The
Wildcat offense outgained Norwalk to the tune of 331 yards to 296 yards.
Carlisle had 51 plays from scrimmage while Norwalk had 68. The ground game for
the Cats was led by KC McMullen who again topped the 100 yard mark with 106
yards on 16 carries. Senior Ty Erb missed the second half due to injury but
finished with 63 yards on 10 carries. Junior quarterback Jordan Pierce had 52
yards on 11 carries including a TD run. Piece finished 3-12 passing for 103
yards including the game winning 80 yard touchdown pass to Josh Hagedorn. Brian
Robertson had one catch for 14 yards while Noah Smith had one catch for nine
yards.
The
defense was led in tackles by senior outside linebacker Nolan Vollstedt with 14
including nine solo stops and two tackles for loss and an interception inside
the five yard line. Junior inside linebacker Joe Crowley finished with 13 stops
including 11 solo, a sack, and two quarterback hurries. Other leading tacklers
included Chase Shannahan with 10, Andrew Hill with 7, Kire Seskis with 7, and
Andrew Burnett with 7. Robertson also had an interception to stop a Norwalk
drive deep in Wildcat territory.
Cats Pick
Up First Win After being down at the half 17-14, the Wildcats regrouped and came out
clawing in the third and fourth quarters to go on to defeat the
Bondurant-Farrar Blue Jays 42-17. The offensive line of Luke Oja, Anthony
Hanson, Garett Onstot, Jon Hobson, and Hunter Warren paved the way for 346
yards rushing and 100 yards passing.
Tyrell Erb only had 8
carries but rushed for 148 yards and 4 TD’s. KC McMullen also went over the
century mark with 115 yards on 21 carries and 1 TD. Also picking up rushing
yardage was Peyton Stephens (8-45), Jordan Pierce (6-35), and Gabe McCaughey
(2-3). Pierce was 6-9 passing for 100 yards and 1 TD. Noah Smith had two
catches for 50 yards and a TD while Brian Robertson had two catches for 38
yards. Henry Sanders (1-8) and Kire Seskis (1-4) had the remaining receptions.
Defensively the Cats
gave up lot of yards to star running back Grant Petersen but did not surrender
any 2nd half points.Chase
Shannahan and Robertson led the defense with 9 tackles each while Joe Crowley,
Nolan Vollstedt, and Erb each had six stops. Sanders has an interception and
Tyler Danitz a fumble recovery. Senior kicker Jose Fuentes was a perfect 6-6 on
PAT attempts and kicked four touchbacks out of seven kickoffs.
Cats Lose in OT to DCG
The Carlisle Wildcat varsity
football team took the field for their first game knowing they were playing a
formidable opponent in the DCG Mustangs. DCG finished 9-2 in 2013 and returned
several starters on both sides of the ball. The teams traded leads throughout
this contest with DCG coming out on top in overtime by the score of 27-24. The
Mustangs blocked a punt and returned it for a TD and also picked up a short
punt and returned it 38 yards for a TD. DCG also held a big advantage in
penalties as the Cats were flagged for 115 yards while DCG 35.
KC McMullen led the offensive
attack with 126 yards rushing on 20 carries (including 1 TD) while fellow
backfield mate Ty Erb finished with 54 yards on 15 carries. Josh Hagedorn and
Peyton Stephens combined for 30 yards rushing on 8 carries. Hagedorn finished
the game 3-9 in the aerial department for 62 yards including a TD and an
interception. Jordan Pierce went 2-5 passing for 22 yards. Noah Smith had 3
catches for 38 yards and a TD while Erb had one reception for eight yards.
Fellow senior Henry Sanders also hauled in a 31 yard reception.
Defensively the Cats held DCG to
under 170 yards of total offense. Senior outside linebacker Nolan Vollstedt led
the team on the tackle chart with 11 total tackles. Senior defensive end Tyler
Danitz finished with 10 tackles including 3 solo sacks. Chase Shannahan also
collected 10 tackles from his inside linebacker position.Senior Jose Fuentes was 3-3 on PAT attempts
and was successful from 25 yards out on his only field goal attempt of the
game.
