In efforts to improve our academics within the football program, we will be starting our academic study hall earlier than we have in the past. As soon as grade check results come out (submitted January 27th) we will be having all football players that have a D or an F come in to study hall from 7:30-8:00am on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. During this time, they will be able to work quietly on their home work or visit any teachers they need to see. They will show up until they are able to raise their grades in all classes above a D. Once all their grades are above a D, they are no longer required to come in. If they have practice for another sport at this time, that will take precedence.
We are also providing a new service for our athletes. Starting Monday, football players will be eligible to sign up for peer tutoring in the subjects and days they feel comfortable with. They will then go into a pool of possible peer tutors for the athletes that are in study hall. However, if there aren’t many athletes in study hall or a certain subject isn’t in need, they may not be asked to tutor for a while. NOT EVERYONE WHO APPLIES TO TUTOR WILL BE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY. Teacher recommendation, knowledge of the subject and the ability to work with others will go into the selection process. The final decision will be at my discretion. Also, if the tutors are unable to get to work and just want to sit and visit, they will be removed for the list.
Along with tutoring, they will be able to earn 30 min of silver cord hours per day spent tutoring. If there is plenty of need, a student could earn up to 1.5 silver cord hours per week. I have attached information regarding the silver cord program for those of you who are unfamiliar with it. If not interested in the silver cord hours, tutoring hours can be used on scholarship applications and things of that nature.
This is the first time we have attempted this. Remember, this is new and there will be some kinks that will need to be worked out. Also, our main focus is to improve academics within our program and offer volunteer hours at the same time.
